São João Hospital Center

São João Hospital Centre (CHSJ) is the largest Portuguese Hospital and a reference in the northern part of the country. It includes the polo of Porto and the polo of Valongo and has a workforce of more than 5000 workers. From the moment it was created, it has been tied to the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto, enabling it to excel on account of the remarkable research and teaching processes developed therein, and to offer increasingly humanized and quality health care services. For many specialties and areas of medical know-how, CHSJ is the last instance and reference in the country in terms of diagnosis and treatment. The CHSJ has about 1100 beds and more than 50 medical and surgical specialties and also has a variety of complementary means of diagnosis and therapeutic support. In the last decade, São João Hospital Centre has been considered by the Public Health National School, the best Portuguese Hospital, eight times. In 2013, the Hospital has won the Sustainable Health Award for these positive practices in public health management. Furthermore, the Portuguese Ministry of Health has assigned to the São João Hospital Centre its distinction for the work that the Hospital has made, through the year.

Both FMUP and CHSJ are distinguished sponsors of Porto Biomedical Journal, bearing an important role in our internal management and dynamics. In addition, some of the most prestigious members of both institutions take active part in our Editorial Board, and the current Administration Board is entirely made up by students currently enrolled in different degrees at FMUP. Our sponsors are fundamental for the streamlined operation of the Journal, which is based on mutually beneficial partnerships and activities. To them, our sincere “Thank you”.
